Chapter Thirteen
Crow
A heavy limb pressed down on Crowâs abdomen and a rock jabbed at the center of his back. He yawned and opened his eyes, squinting. The sun was rising, chasing away the night. âFuck,â he shouted, sitting up too quickly. His head spun. âFuck.â
A groan came from beside him. âWhat?â
Reva. Fuzzy memories flooded through Crow. His mind slipping away. Reva bathing. Him crawling like a fool. Reva kissing him. Sleep. Them waking to the sound of howling pixies and scrambling to find shelter in the woods like two drunkards. Sleeping again. Her arms around him. Her head on his chest.
âWhat happened?â Reva asked, groggy.
Crow rolled from beneath the shelter and stood. Sticks were woven together and fastened over four low posts to mimic the appearance of dirt from above. Or, close enough to dirt to fool the pixies. He searched the wooded area around them to avoid meeting Revaâs heavy stare. Sheâd watched him break down, seen his fear. It felt shameful. He wanted Reva to see him as someone she could rely on, not a babbling idiot. It was bad enough the rest of Oz had seen him at his worst, but he wasnât cursed anymore. It was him this time. His cheeks burned.
âWe left our supplies near the river.â She stepped up to his side and ran a hand down her cheek. âAny chance you remember where that river is?â
Crow cringed. âI barely remember us waking up and finding this place.â And the softness of her lips against his. But he didnât dare say that. Did she remember? Even if she did, she would surely prefer to forget it had happened.
Reva stretched her back and sighed heavily. âThis way,â she said, sounding mostly certain.
Crow studied the woods as he followed her, hoping to see something familiar. Purple flowers grew up from beneath a carpet of fallen leaves and nearly-invisible hanging vines captured the light, casting prisms over the dark tree bark. The body of a half-eaten fae lay partially under a large bush, too far decomposed to tell what it might have been. A tuft of light brown fur clung to a piece of the carcass, and the bones were scored with teeth marks. Bugs and beasts alike stirred for the day, chirps and snorts piercing through the forest around them, but Crow couldnât tell where they were or from which way they had come. What the hell had happened yesterday? One second, they were fine. The nextâ¦
âHere it is,â Reva called. She had gotten slightly ahead of him and passed through the trees to the riverbank. Crow stepped over a fallen tree, then swerved to avoid stepping in a spot of stagnant mud. She spun to face him, righteous anger written all over her face. âSomeone went through our bags.â
Crow sprinted to close the distance between them. Their belongings were scattered over the clearing. Fruitâsome nothing but a core, others untouchedâand clothing were left in the dirt. But why go through their bags if the thief
